Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is located off the coast of Stone Town in Zanzibar, Tanzania. It got its name because it was initially built in the late 19th century to serve as a prison for rebellious slaves. However, the prison was never actually used for that purpose, and today the island is a popular tourist destination.
To reach Prison Island, you can take a boat or a dhow (traditional sailing vessel) from Stone Town. The journey typically takes around 25 minutes. Once you arrive, you can explore the island and its attractions.
One of the main attractions on Prison Island is the giant tortoise sanctuary. The island is home to a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over a hundred years old. Visitors can observe and interact with these fascinating creatures.
