Kiwengwa Caves are several caves located in the Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest Reserve. The reserve is located between Kiwengwa and Pongwe on the east coast of Unguja and is 20 km from Zanzibar Town.
These caves are a part of the ancient history of Zanzibar Island. The locals would visit the caves to worship their ancestors, bringing gifts to the holy stones.
One of these caves is Mchekeni Coral Caves, which was developed with a concrete path to enter the caves, a reception centre has been built and there are rangers, daily from 10 am – 5 pm.
The reserve is an important biodiversity spot in the coral rag zone, and the forest reserve is rich in both faunal and floral species such as red colobus monkey, Aders’s duiker, sykes, blue monkeys, Sunni antelope, and several species of snakes.
A café and a souvenir shop were built as well, but are not yet operational. Torches are provided by the rangers. But if you have a torch/headlamp bring your own as well.
In this tour, you may combine one of these tours such as the Zanzibar Quad adventure, Stone town tour, Half day Mnemba island, Prison island tour, also Diving in Mnemba
