Zanzibar Airport

Zanzibar airport, Kisauni International Airport is the main airport in the Zanzibar Archipelago located on Unguja Island. It is about 5 kilometers south of Zanzibar City, the capital of Zanzibar, and has flights to East Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Geographical Location

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is located on the outer parts of a town of Zanzibar Town, approximately 10 km from the city center. It is a short drive from the center of Zanzibar town, but if you are staying in one of Zanzibar’s beach hotels you will need to understand the travel time to the airport, which can be as much as 2hrsto reach.

NEW SAFETY MEASURE DUE TO COVID-19

Please note that due to Covid-19, the Zanzibar International Airport have enacted several safety measures in order to protect both the staff and tourists coming in and out of the airport. These measures include:

  1.  Ensuring every tourist arriving in the country is not infected with COVID-19; All travelers arriving will be subjected to an intensive screening and where necessary COVID-19 rapid testing.
  2.  The airport staff will have to be tested for COVID-19 so that only those who are safe will provide services; In addition, all attendants will have to wear facemasks all the time; they will also have to wear gloves and will have to use sanitizers as directed by MoHCDEC. In addition, they must make sure that they observe the social distance of not less than one meter from one staff to another and from the guest
  1. All other members on the tourism activities value chain will be regularly monitored to ensure they are not infected with the Coronavirus; These include ensuring gloves are always worn when loading and unloading passenger baggage, cargo, and pouches, and the taxi drivers at the airport are tested. Only staff that are not infected with Corona Virus will be allowed to cater to tourist. However, all staff will have to wear masks and make sure that they stay at least one meter apart between themselves and the tourist.
  1. All tourist transport facilities, tourist accommodation, and all other facilities used by tourists must be cleaned and sanitized before and after service in an acceptable manner to ensure that they do not become infected with Corona Virus.

Getting Here

  • Taxi – The taxis that will get you from the Zanzibar city center or Beach hotel to the airport 10 kilometers (15 minutes) away for Tzs 20,000- Tzs 30,000 (USD $15 – 15).
  • Preferred Mode – Pre-arranged transfer or Taxis are the preferred methods especially if you have luggage with you.
  • Airport Transfers – There is a Transfer guide outside of the airport all ready to take you where you want to go
  • Alternatives – The ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar departs 3 times daily and
  • Car Parking & Fees – There is an automated POS parking system at the airport and it is 1,000Tzs per hour. Long stays should be pre-arranged by contacting the airport authority.

Auxiliary Information

There is a restaurant as well as shops, airline offices and travel agencies outside the Terminal Building. For International and Regional Travellers, inside the main terminal building, there is a small grocery store selling hot and cold drinks and snacks. There is also a duty-free shop available.

For domestic departures, there is a small seating area with a shop selling a small selection of snacks and cold and hot drinks.

  • Flight from Hub

Julius Nyerere International Airport is the main hub in Tanzania and there are several daily flights both to and from Zanzibar as well as connections to other parts of Tanzania.

Hotels & Transit Accommodation

As Zanzibar is a major tourism destination, there are hotels available all over the island at varying prices from$30 a night all the way up to $5000 a night for a luxury suite. Hotels near to the airport include Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins and Zanzibar Beach Resort.
In Stone Town, you will find hotels such as the historic Kholle House, named after Princess Kolle. Beach resorts are available all over the Island, The Z Hotel and The Zanzibari in the North, Fumba Beach Lodge in the South and on the South East coast you will find Kichanga Lodge, amongst many others.
