Pemba Airport Guide

Pemba Airport, also known as Karume or Wawi Airport and by its IATA Code PMA and ICAO Code HTPE, is a regional airport and one of two airports that service the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Republic of Tanzania.

Pemba Airport is located on the Pemba Island in the Zanzibar Archipelago of the Republic of Tanzania. It is located some 7 kilometers southeast of Chake-Chake which is the administrative capital of the Island.

NEW SAFETY MEASURE DUE TO COVID-19

Please note that due to Covid-19,the Pemba Airport have enacted several safety measures to protect both the staff and tourists coming in and out of the airport. These measures include:

  1.  Ensuring every tourist arriving in the country is not infected with COVID-19; All travelers arriving will be subjected to an intensive screening and where necessary COVID-19 rapid testing.

 

  1.  The airport staff will have to be tested for COVID-19 so that only those who are safe will provide services; Besides, all attendants will have to wear facemasks all the time; they will also have to wear gloves and will have to use sanitizers as directed by MoHCDEC. Besides, they must make sure that they observe the social distance of not less than one meter from one staff to another and from the guest

 

  1. All other members on the tourism activities value chain will be regularly monitored to ensure they are not infected with the Coronavirus; These include ensuring gloves are always worn when loading and unloading passenger baggage, cargo and pouches and the taxi drivers at the airport are tested. Only staff that are not infected with Corona Virus will be allowed to cater to tourist. However, all staff will have to wear masks and make sure that they stay at least one meter apart between themselves and the tourist.

 

  1. All tourist transport facilities, tourist accommodation, and all other facilities used by tourists must be cleaned and sanitized before and after service acceptably to ensure that they do not become infected with Corona Virus.

Getting Here

  • Ferry – Direct ferry from Dar es Salaam operated by Azam Ferries or with a stopover at the Unguja Island of Zanzibar.
  • Preferred Mode – Flying into the airport is by far the least complicated option, from Dar es Salaam the journey takes one hour and costs $100.
  • Shuttle Bus – The airport does not operate one.
  • Alternatives – There are public passenger transport vehicles, known locally as Daladala, which will get you from anywhere within Pemba Island to the airport at a fee of Tzshs 5,000 ($2.27). This option is not for the weak of heart or first-time visitors to the country.
  • Car Parking & Fees –There is ample parking within the airport and it’s free for a limited period.

There are several(at least 4) daily direct flights from Tanzania’s hub Dar es Salaam (Julius K Nyerere) International Airport to Pemba Airport for a flight time of 1 hour.

Airlines Using As Hub

No airline currently uses this airport as a hub.

The taxis and car hire vehicles will pick and drop you within the terminal there are porters ready to help you with your luggage, for a small tip.

Pemba Island is the prettier sibling of Unguja the two main Islands that make up the Zanzibar archipelago. A world-famous deep-sea diving site it has some world-class accommodations such as the Manta Resort, the Pemba Lodge, Hifadhi Hotel, and Kervan Saray Beach Lodge.
