There is something truly magical about experiencing Tanzania’s wilderness on a short camping safari. In just two days, you will immerse yourself in the heart of Africa’s wildlife, staying close to nature in comfortable public or private campsites. Unlike lodge-based safaris, camping safaris allow you to feel the raw spirit of adventure hearing lions roar in the distance, hyenas calling at night, and waking up to the songs of birds as the African sun rises.
On this 2-day itinerary, you will explore two of Tanzania’s most famous wildlife areas: Tarangire National Park and the legendary Ngorongoro Crater. Tarangire is renowned for its majestic baobab trees and large herds of elephants, while Ngorongoro Crater, often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, offers unparalleled opportunities to see the Big Five in one location.
Even though this safari is short, it is perfectly designed for travelers with limited time who still want to capture the essence of Tanzania’s wildlife experience. Days are filled with thrilling game drives, while evenings are spent around the campfire under a starry sky, making it a memorable and authentic African adventure.
After an early breakfast, you will meet your professional safari guide for a briefing before setting off toward Tarangire National Park. The drive takes you through Maasai villages and scenic landscapes until you arrive at the park’s entrance gate.
Tarangire is famous for its rolling savannah dotted with ancient baobab trees and is home to one of the largest populations of elephants in Tanzania. During the game drive, you may also encounter lions, leopards, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffes, and a wide variety of bird species. The Tarangire River, which runs through the park, attracts large herds of animals, especially during the dry season, making it an incredible location for wildlife photography.
You will enjoy a packed picnic lunch inside the park, followed by an afternoon game drive until the early evening. Afterward, you will head to your campsite near Mto wa Mbu or Karatu, where tents will be set up. Dinner is prepared by your safari cook, and you can spend the evening relaxing by the campfire, sharing stories under the vast African night sky.
Overnight: Public or Private Campsite (Full Board: Dinner, Breakfast & Lunch included).
Wake up early to the sounds of nature and enjoy a hot breakfast at the campsite before departing for Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most remarkable safari destinations in Africa. You will descend over 600 meters into the crater floor, which is home to more than 25,000 animals.
Here, you will have the chance to spot the Big Five lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino. The crater is also home to large numbers of hippos, wildebeest, zebras, hyenas, and countless bird species. With its lush grasslands, acacia forests, and soda lake, the scenery is just as breathtaking as the wildlife encounters.
You will enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated spot inside the crater while taking in the spectacular views. After a full day of game viewing, you will ascend out of the crater and begin the journey back to Arusha/Moshi, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.
